This visa is designed for professionals in their fields who wish to immigrate to Australia, and allows the applicant immediate permanent residency once granted. An applicant must lodge an initial Expression of Interest (EOI) and be invited to apply,whereupon the visa application is to be made.
This is a points based visa with points being gained for, inter alia, qualifications, experience, English language ability and age. Occupation lists known as the MLTSSL (Medium to Long Term Skilled Occupation List) and STSOL (Short Term Skilled Occupation List) are relevant to your eligibility for this visa. You must have a nominated occupation on the MLTSSL in order to qualify for this visa.
It should also be noted that occupations differ in their competitiveness and therefore points requirements. As an example, if you are applying as a solicitor you would more than likely be invited to apply with the base points requirement of 65 points. However, if your nominated occupation is more competitive, for instance if you are an accountant, the points requirement for an invite may be 80 points or more.
In the EOI you will provide claims as to the core elements of your application, for instance education and experience. Once you have been given an invite to apply for a visa based on the strength of your EOI, you will then have to provide documentary evidence to corroborate your claims.
Upon submission of your visa application, approval can be given in very short time frames. I have personally been involved in decisions where permanent residency was granted in 3 weeks.
